The Death of the Middle Class Musician (feat. Tim Pierce)
I saw the first concert tour after Genesis, it Was so special that I saw every tour after, In Your Eyes is so powerful in the emotions it creates and in the right perspective and with the right person you will cry
Yngwie who?
One thing that always blows me away is how guitarists who, presumably, have no training in music theory can write these incredibly sophisticated chord progressions and melodies. It’s remarkable.
Love this song. Had no idea it would be most streamed ever. (I hoped it would be a Queen song, actually). But this really is a good one. It's so unique!
A truly incredible album that marked a major point in my life, and by reading these comments it seems many others feel the same.
Aldo swears he was threatened by chris cross Aldo wrote Sailing he said
Awesome
We live in a musical dark age
Don't forget Rick that the record Syndicate needed Stars to make profits from , a promoted these guys into Superstar Fame and repted billions of dollars profits. Today's syndicate pumps up a few artists into almost God status where they can charge 200.00 up to $10,000 for a concert ticket.
I love his face lol
Nirvana sucked, most overrated band ever!
Yesss I guessed it, without thinking it through but based on memory from having played it as a teenager. That thing at the end of the verse where they play one step above and below the root covers two of the unusual ones. All right, let's keep watching.
Love this interview, so much fun seeing Steve being so humble and a great player!
the intro sounds like "Stacy's Mom"
There's at least a 75% chance that the D is there by mistake but he kept it.
Thx for the vid. It was fun!
Its their best song in my opinion.
You were obviously gaslighted
Knives Out by Radiohead uses all 12 notes
You should cover Brian Blush from the refreshments! I can put you in touch. He is a good friend of mine. Killer guitar player killer tone look up the song Bandidos and you will remember them if you don’t …you’re awesome Rick… thank you.
people who think kurt didnt know what he was doing is old horse crap. kurt cobain purposely pointed his songs towards the blues, he rooted it in blues, and every song if all else fails, falls into blues writing. he probably played chords over and over that to him were unique enough and he found a million melodies in each progression but probably sat on the natural melodies. this is why nirvana was simple and good. natural melody and obscure blues style progressions.
Wow!
What makes this even more amazing is Kurt unlikely made a conscious choice to write complex melodies. He had an innate ability to make something complex sound accessible. Elliott Smith is another person that comes to mind who did this.
Rush… the spirit of radio is my favorite.
Hendrix would definitely stand out and have success today, it’s not just about his guitar playing but his composition skills and music he created, so I disagree
Argh, the blandness. (Flowers is the pick of the bunch - pun intended) No wonder Gen Zers are often anxious/stressed, they have zero emotional outlet in the music they listen to.
5:18 wow that was genuinely phenomenal!
I just started relearning guitar after a 20 yr hiatus and learned in bloom a few days ago. Such good timing for this video 😊
Great video as always, Rick! Speaking of compression, will you please do a video about the loudness war? I’d love to hear your expertise and opinions on the matter.
That piano, Rick, at the end.... blew my mind... as Peter Frampton said....let's make a song out of that.
Julia by Lennon is also a complex pop song
He is in the same class as Johnny A and Tommy Emmanuel! Awesome
I’ve hated this “country” hit since I first heard it. It’s the most basic, “look I’m country now” song someone could do
Corruption SUXX !
like that😂
If I'm not mistaken I think Lucky White did it in B flat, or came close when he recorded his version of SUGAR MOON on July 12, 1947. Written by Bob Wills and Cindy Walker. Lucky's Rendition sounds like a Django Reinhardt jazz tune. You can hear it on Lucky's Digital Album entitled: NO MUSIC NO BETTIES NO LUCKY on all digital platforms.
I honestly think part of why Take Me To Church got so massive and radio played is BECAUSE most people don't actively listen and interpret lyrics I saw Hozier do this interview with this Catholic who had no clue what the song was about, it's so awkward. If people knew how critical it was, I don't think it would have got mainstream approval, and just stayed viral underground.
Jimi could sing and play, I think this set him apart from the rest
Crazy, not a musician, but I guessed it. In my mind it sounds like lots of notes.
Lot of the emotional content of that song was in that guitar riff. Played Human Nature on repeat back when it first came out.

Wow What a lovely interview Rick 👏 Thank you for this Nathaniel is such a nice fella So humble 🫂👌
Now, I'm not a musician or songwriter, but just someone who is music obsessed who has very eclectic tastes in music. Another band contemporary to Nirvana, but that still exists to this day, whom, according to my untrained ear, I think might have at least one song that uses all twelve notes in it is Radiohead. There are songs off of OK Computer, Kid-A, Amnesiac, and In Rainbows that have so much going on in them, sonically-speaking, that I totally wouldn't be surprised if they did indeed use all of the available notes in their composition
Amazing channel! The Sting interview was fantastic!
A beautiful guitarist with a very genuine spirit!
You say notes and my brain thinks notes instead of chords then I thought. Maybe all apologies? I love In Bloom. I know how to play it and never thought about this.
Also check chromaticism and octave displacement In Soundgarden‘s “Cold Bitch.” Also “Pretty Noose.”
Wish we could’ve analyzed this instead of Schoenberg at conservatory… zzzzzz
